2011 Census figures showed that there were 370 young carers in the 240 square miles of the Winchester district. The findings revealed that a massive 10% of those children were caring for over 50 hours per week

The aim of WYC is to improve the lives of children and young people with caring responsibilities by providing safe, quality support and offering an inclusive, wide ranging and holistic approach that consider the needs of the whole family.

The experienced staff and team of dedicated volunteers from the local community know that young carers are first and foremost children and they deserve the freedom to develop emotionally and physically just like any other child. They also work with parents, many of whom are from seldom heard groups in our community, such as those struggling with mental health issues.

Ben Hogbin, the WYC manager, explained “Every Wednesday, the team at the Winnall centre run two sessions as part of their Exploration Programme… this provides a safe place for the young people to share their thoughts feelings needs and concerns.    Just as fundamental in supporting the young people, the Activity Programme gives much needed time out via a diverse timetable of activities during the school holidays Coupled with this, the team provide support in schools, have a befriending scheme and take a holistic view in providing support for the entire family”

The Belgarum team are hugely excited to have the opportunity to get involved with such a worthwhile cause and are looking forward to meeting the young carers and volunteers alike

Over the next year we ask that you look out for Belgarum’s fundraising efforts and support us however you can.
