Picturesque and aspirational, with an ancient history.
This pretty and highly-sought-after area runs alongside Winchester’s lush water meadows, St. Cross has a varied range of properties, many of historical interest. St. Faiths is a lovely small COE school and local pubs include The Bell Inn, Queen Inn, Green Man and of course the Wykeham Arms. Large parts of this area are owned by Winchester College and house staff and scholars.
The 12th Century Hospital of St. Cross is an Almshouse of Noble Poverty, whose community of 25 brothers still issues the Wayfarer’s Dole, a small beaker of beer and a morsel of bread on request. Walks into the city are particularly appealing along the water meadows or up St. Catherine’s Hill.
