Trends see London population surge

New figures showing where Britain's population has risen in the
past decade have revealed that London has seen a more rapid
increase than elsewhere.
The capital saw an eight per cent increase in its population to
7.56 million compared with a five per cent rise across the UK from
58.31 million to 60.98 million, HBOS has stated.
Using figures based on Office for National Statistics data, HBOS
also noted that the four highest increases by local authority were
in central and west London, these being the City, Westminster,
Kensington and Chelsea and Camden, all of which saw rises of 25 per
cent or higher.
Of the 74 authorities seeing an increase in population of over ten
per cent, only four were in northern England, of which the city of
Manchester was the sole metropolitan authority.
The trend may help to explain why house prices have risen faster in
London and the south in recent years, as increases in population
have put pressure on housing supply.
Earlier this year London Councils, the body representing the 32
individual metropolitan boroughs of the capital, projected that
London's population will rise by another 720,000 by 2026 and called
for another 353,000 homes to be built in the metropolis.
